Valentines: Spread Love
Valentines is here with us still eliciting different meanings to different people and communities as it has ever done. Of course it has western origin and orientation and the process of contextualization particularly in Africa is ongoing. However, I guess the process of celebrating this day will be accomplished rather fast considering that African culture just like other human cultures have means/acts to express love. This forms invaluable foundation. Of course the concept of Valentine as a day to express love may seem strange because not all cultures have set aside day/days African culture included.
Nevertheless, despite being imbued with western culture, there are certain values therein which can enrich all regardless of creed, race, nationality or status.
Love and affection is outstanding in the entire discourse and practice during Valentine’s Day. This ranks within the realm of human longings. Right from family into various social relationships, people are ever in need of being loved. Martha Teresa observed lack of LOVE as being a form of poverty.
For them that subscribes to Christian faith, The Bible has recorded in 1 Cor. 13:4-8; that love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered and it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes and always perseveres. Love never fails.
All of us can learn about the qualities of love as indicated in this Christian text. It offers guidelines on how to express love to spouse, children and friends and to those we come across.
Many times Valentine day is seen as a domain of couples. This is far from the truth. In a world permeated by hate, more Love is needed. It is the medicine to treat hatred. It is almost the absolute panacea!
It should therefore go beyond couples. Meaning we need to extend it to the children and the community.
What a good thing today if we bring children to the equation of valentine. They will learn why and how to love and express love to you as a parent, to their friends, neighbors and to those in need of being loved. Model and teach them on friendship, kindness and inclusion as important aspects in expressing love to fellow human beings.
Finally create memories of love by appreciating them, reiterating your love for them, doing an activity aimed at affirmation of love etc.
Beyond our children and spouses, let us spread love to all the others and hopefully to the entire creation. If we love, we attract love. It may not necessary come from those we have shown love, but it will surely come back to us for love begets loves.
“Let us always meet each other with a smile, for the smile is the beginning of Love” – Mother Teresa
